Description: Otoplasty is surgery to correct protruding ears. This surgery is most commonly performed on children.
Preoperative and Postoperative Considerations
The ear usually reaches maturation by five or six years of age and can be operated on at this time. Frequently children with protruding ears are ridiculed by their peers because of their appearance. You may want to consider having this surgery done before your child enters school.
Commonly asked questions before Surgery:
- Will I have much discomfort?
There is usually minimal discomfort after otoplasty, and this can usually be controlled by oral medication.
- Will I have a scar?
The incision and the scar are placed behind the ear. All necessary work is done through this incision, and once the scar heals it is well concealed.
- What can I expect immediately after the surgery?
A dressing will be placed on the ears to maintain position and keep swelling to a minimum. This will be removed the next day. Instructions will be given regarding the cleaning and care of the ears. It will be necessary to place a headband over the ears especially at night during sleep, for several weeks, in order to prevent injury to the ears.
- What are the risks?
Bleeding, infection and unfavorable scarring are rare. These will be discussed during your consultation as well as ways to avoid them. Asymmetry between the ears usually exists before surgery. This will be improved after surgery but may still exist to a minor extent.
