Wrinkle Reduction-Wrinkle Treatments
- Safe and successful treatments for reduction or elimination wrinkles are now available. Injecting or implanting substances which either temporarily weaken the muscles (Botox®) or act as skin volume fillers (Restylane®, Fat Injection) serve to soften or eliminate the appearance of wrinkles and produce a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Treatments for facial wrinkles are usually performed in the office setting which is convenient, private, and safe for persons who desire therapy.
- In comparison to typical cosmetic surgical procedures, the office time for these procedures and the subsequent recovery period until one returns to normal function are minimal. Botox® therapy typically takes a few minutes to perform, and most patients may return immediately to home or work. Minor local irritation, redness, bruising, or swelling at the injection sites are the most commonly observed side effects, all of which typically abate within a few hours. Likewise, Restylane® therapy can be accomplished with a 5-15 minute procedure with similar attendant side effects. Some mild irritation at the injection sites is unavoidable but can easily be camouflaged with standard make-up, if necessary.
- Please arrange a consultation with Dr. Lin (212) 722-5570 to discuss the options that are most compatible with your goals.
- Many wrinkles are actually creases that have been formed by making the same expression thousands of times. “Expression lines” of the face including frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow's feet, are due to the repetitive contraction of a muscle under the skin in that area.
- Botox® acts to relax the muscle responsible for creating the wrinkle.
- What is Botox®?
Botox® is a purified protein (Botulinum toxin) produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It works as a nerve impulse "blocker", binding to nerve endings and preventing the release of chemical transmitters that activate the muscle. Very small amounts are placed to achieve the desired effects. Although Botox® is a toxin, it is an extremely safe product with over 20 years of clinical experience when used for aesthetic purposes. In addition, it is the most common cosmetic procedure currently undertaken in the United States for facial enhancement. Women who are pregnant, lactating, or patients with neuromuscular functional disorders should not receive Botox® injections.
- BOTOX® injections are performed at our upper East Side Office in a matter of minutes . The full effect of the treatment is apparent within five days or less, and usually lasts three to six months, before full muscle movement returns.

Volume Restoration
- With aging, the supporting structures of the face, including bone and fat, weaken and diminish in volume. This gives the face a deflated appearance. Volume restoration refers to the goal of “re-inflating” the underlying tissues of the face with a filler agent. This restores a more youthful and natural appearance. This applies to hollowing around the eyes, cheeks and lips that have lost their prominence, deep nasolabial creases, and wrinkles around the mouth. There are a wide variety of options available to you including:
- Fat Transfer
- Restylane®/Perlane®
- Radiesse®
- During your consultation, a discussion with your doctor will help you decide if any of these options are right for you.
- Restylane® is an enormously popular non-surgical option for those who desire a very natural return to younger looking skin and fresher features. Restylane® is an FDA approved dermal filler made of biodegradable Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA™), a completely natural substance which already exists in the human body. Perlane® belongs to the same family of NASHA filler as Restylane®, with the primary difference being that Perlane® contains larger hyaluronic acid gel particles. This allows for deeper facial folds to be treated more effectively with Perlane®.
- Upon being injected beneath the skin's surface, Restylane® adds natural volume and lift to smooth wrinkles and folds by integrating into dermal tissue. The natural filling agent in the dermis then attracts and binds to water molecules to help maintain volume. Since Restylane® is made of hyaluronic acid, which naturally exists in humans, it is naturally degraded by the body and disappears without any residue. Restylane® requires no allergy test. The most common side effects are temporary redness and swelling. These effects usually subside in just a few days.
- Restylane® is indicated for the correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the lines between the nose and mouth) or lines around the mouth, eyes, and forehead. It can be used to restore lost volume to the lips or tissues underneath the skin.
- Restylane® has been used in more than one million cosmetic procedures, and in more than 60 countries outside of the United States since 1996. In clinical studies, the most commonly reported adverse events were redness and swelling, which typically occurred at the injection site and were transient and mild to moderate in intensity.
- Restylane® or Perlane® injections are performed at our upper East Side Office in a matter of minutes . Results can be seen immediately following treatment and lasts three to six months.

Fat transfer is an anti-aging technique that reintroduces the patient’s own fat to the body. Fat transfer relies on injections of tiny droplets of fat harvested from the patient’s own abdomen or thigh to restore more youthful contours to the face.
By using the patient's own fat, there is no risk of allergic reactions or rejections by the body. The deeply embedded fat does not shift or migrate. Though more time consuming than using traditional filler agents (i.e. Restylane®, Radiesse®), fat transfer is more cost effective due to its potential for longer lasting results.

- Many people seek options to reverse the effects of sun damage and aging upon the skin. The skin is composed of the epidermis and dermis. Within the dermis are two layers, both of which are constructed of collagen, long fibers that loosen and stretch with sun damage and aging. Chemical peel and laser surgery are two options for skin resurfacing that effectively promotes rejuevation of the long fibers of collagen in the dermal layer of the skin to provide a younger and smoother texture to the skin. Two types of skin resurfacing procedures that Dr. Lin performs are chemical peel and laser surgery.
- Chemical peel
In a chemical peel, the surgeon applies one of several chemicals to the skin. Glycolic acid is the mildest. TCA, trichloroacetic acid, can be used in varying strengths for deeper and longer lasting skin smoothness.
- Laser surgery
The high energy, amplified light waves of carbon dioxide (CO2) laser vaporize the top layer of skin instantly, with no bleeding and minimal trauma to the surrounding skin.
- Postoperative recovery
- Swelling and “crusting” of the skin are normal after skin resurfacing. In one to two weeks following skin resurfacing, new skin emerges that is pinkish and free of many wrinkles. But it will take several more weeks for all of the redness of the skin to vanish.
- During the first 7 to 10 days patients will frequently need to apply a lubricating ointment to the treated areas of the skin. Follow-up care involves using sunblock to protect the skin while new pigment is being created. Patients will notice that the skin remains lighter for a long time after surgery, and may subside when the skin’s pigment level has been restored.
- If you have dark skin or problems such as allergies, previous burns, a history of poor scars, or radiation exposure, you may not be a good candidate for this type of treatment. If you have had episodes of cold sores or blisters around the mouth, inform your surgeon of this condition. Before deciding on a skin resurfacing regimen, Dr. Lin may recommend a skin care regimen prior to the procedure.
